The Truth

Checking In…More Ideas

How are you doing?

So, how are you doing? The time our country – well world – is in is what some are calling uncertain. I look at it in a different way. I don’t know what the future holds no matter what is going on, but God does.

There is a higher chance of getting sick right now, and we’re being forced to isolate more, but to those of us who are already isolated things haven’t changed much.

However, right now may seem more difficult because we can’t go out if we wanted to, and people are focused on themselves more. No one checks on me usually so no one is checking on me right now either.

If I get sick I am still the only one to take care of me. I am praying for our health care system and for our country as we go through this because I don’t want to see the system overwhelmed.

If this coronavirus had happened even 6 months ago I would have reacted differently. I would have been totally freaked out and scared because my anxiety was off the charts most days. I have learned techniques to lower my anxiety, but it is also resolving as I work through trauma.

So, if you’re really scared and anxious right now I have no judgements and I understand the feeling. I’ve been there and I empathize with you!

I can only pray for you and that you will make it through this time and come to a place one day where your anxiety is better. Believe me, I understand how debilitating it can be! I pray God begins to give you peace.

If you find yourself going into a panic attack or so anxious you can’t function focus on your breathing. Slowly, in for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds and do that for about 10 minutes. It will slow your nervous system down and you will feel calmer in your body.

What else can you do right now during this time? I’ve mentioned some ideas the past couple of weeks. Today I’ll share a few more in hopes you can find ways to occupy your time and still be productive in your healing.

  1. Don’t stay in the house all day long. If it’s not raining no matter the weather go outside and sit on your porch or back patio. Go for a walk around the block if you can. Just make sure to put on sunscreen if you’ll be out for a while. I forgot and have quite a sunburn from standing out for 4 hours loading groceries in cars at the food pantry.

  1. Find something you want to learn how to do and look up a YouTube video on it. Maybe you want to fix something in your home or renovate things yourself. Use the time now to learn about what you want to do. I recently looked up how to replace the flapper in your toilet to keep it from leaking. Made me feel good to do it myself! Give it a try!

  1. I downloaded apps for the Christian radio stations in the area and play them on my phone as I work around the house or even while I’m writing. It is uplifting to hear encouraging music – especially when you’re alone.

  1. Keep a journal during this time – and I don’t just mean the coronavirus, but you’re healing from sexual assault. Journaling your path as you heal will give you hope as you look back and see the progress you’ve made!

  1. One last thing today – limit your viewing of news online (including Facebook) and on TV to no more than twice a day for a limited time. It will depress you and cause increased anxiety if you overload on it. Even the World Health Organization has recommended this.

Hang in there my friends and stay healthy! Again, if you have any ideas send me a message or put it in comments. Blessings to all of you!

I am a former elementary school teacher and I am currently in the process of recovering from a childhood of sexual abuse and rape. I am pursuing God's will for my life right now which involves following various writing endeavors and working on some publishing. I feel God has led me to write this for my own healing, and to share with others who have been through the trauma of sexual assault.
