Charm Is Deceitful And Beauty Is Fleeting

Where is your focus?

As I’m writing this, we’re heading into a new year where I’m already seeing advertisements for weight loss. I am all about being healthy and I think we should take care of the bodies God has given us, but we need to be realistic. You can have the most perfect body on the outside and yet have a very nasty heart.

In Proverbs 31, we are told, “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the lord shall be praised.” Notice there is not one single mention of her appearance. The attractiveness of this woman who has been termed, the “Proverbs 31 woman“ is all about her character and her virtue. It says she is worth far more than rubies.

As we enter yet another new year, and I pass by the mirrors and see the weight I have gained, I have to remember it does not define me. It is not who I am inside my heart. I am a child of God because I know Jesus. I am not what others say about my appearance. I don’t know about you, but I want to spend my life focusing on the eternal, which makes me rethink how much time I spend on my appearance. There is a balance between taking care of ourselves and allowing it to control us.

It’s my prayer going into the new year that I focus on my inward beauty and allow it to shine, while also asking God to help me be mindful of putting healthy things into my body. Taking care of the temple He’s given me so I can fulfill His purpose on earth.

Whether you are a man or a woman, I ask you this question. Where is your beauty? Where do you focus? How are people attracted to you? Let’s take it to God today and ask for His guidance and direction.

Father God,

Help me focus on You and seeking you with all my heart. Remind me, I am Your child because I know Jesus and my earthly body will one day be gone, but yet my spirit will live on. As we enter a new year, help me balance taking care of the body You’ve given me to fulfill Your purpose here, and taking care to become more of who You call me to be inside my heart. I cannot do it without You.

In Jesus name,

Amen
